I think it's as good a site title as you're going to get. Here's why:
It's not "Programmers," which smacks of people who write teh codez.
Electrical Engineering's name change (from Electronics) was very good for them. It raised the quality bar on that site significantly.

Change to Software Engineering
Tour / Tag Line
Software Engineering is a question and answer site for people involved in the Systems Development Life ...
I've noticed a lot of discussion on this issue, and as a new user I feel I can shed some light as I have previously had difficulty when trying to decide whether a question I have, does in fact fit the sites scope.
Before a user joins programmers.se they are welcomed with what I feel is a fairly clear definition of the sites scope:
It is a well known fact ...
We made it, y'all! We just pushed the changes and now, after 8 long months...
The name for the site has changed to Software Engineering Stack Exchange.
The logo for the site has been updated to the one shown in the top left of the page.
The default domain for the site has changed to softwareengineering.stackexchange.com.
The site scope has been simplified.
Do you care about applying craftsmanship1 or engineering to the planning, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of software? Are you concerned with all aspects of software development (and not just writing/debugging/testing code)? Are you concerned with the practice (as opposed to the theory) of software development?
If you can answer "...
Oct. 20th, 2016 - This is done!
See: It's official! Programmers is now Software Engineering Stack Exchange
It took us a good while, but the Community Team has circled up and here's where we stand on your request to change Programmers.SE's name.
We agree that renaming this site is a good idea.
"Programmers" is an affinity group, whereas "...
How happy I am that this day has finally come! These are my suggestions, some similarities to Snowman's answer with certain omissions and value-adds.
I favor the new site name, Software Engineering
I am neutral to the new site name, Software Development
I dislike the name, Software Architecture however as this can be considered a distinct subtype ...
It is a valid request, but I see some problems here:
to find a name which really describes the sites scope better, and not just different or equally bad (or worse).
once the name is changed, there is probably no easy way back for the next few years. A site name change is something I do not expect the SE team to make every two weeks. So if the change does ...
Why is "Programmers" changing to "Software Engineering?"
Because the name "Programmers" invites all sorts of questions that are only vaguely related to software engineering, questions that we don't want.
Has anything else changed?
Yes. The Tour and the Help Center have a new tag line, the public description of the site which is ...
The close questions statistics don't allow you to see windows that you can adjust, but I wonder if you can use SEDE to explore more. I'll also see if a CM can run some queries and do some data analytics.
Here are the statistics for percentage of total questions closed, by reason, in the last 30 days:
Assistance in explaining, writing, or debugging code: 18....
Quite pleased to see the change but I would still insist to get a more serious font for the title SOFTWARE ENGINEERING like they have on Electrical Engineering, and Chemistry.
The current font of the title still gives a comical(non-serious) feel, IMO.
I also feel that it will look more professional to have the title like:
Software Engineering rather than ...
When I read this post, my initial thought was, "If I upvote this, will it be interpreted as either (a) 'I approve this on-topic list' or (b) 'I approve further discussions of details'." And honestly, I don't like any further discussions until the main point (changing the name) is implemented.
You see, "If we're gonna do this... Let's do it right." argument ...
Software Design is not mathematics - for lots of questions in this area, there is not objective "right" or "wrong", only opinions about "better" or "worse" based on certain experience. So I would not expect any change for questions which are opinionated to a certain degree. On the other hand, purely opinionated questions were closed very quickly by the ...
I like this, I like this a lot.
The design is just the right amount different from the current one to show continuity and yet show that we've changed, matured and grown up.
One small thing - is there any change whatsoever we can get se.stackexchange.com as a short form of the url? softwareengineering.stackexchange.com is a doozy to type out when you're in ...
I Love It
In short, our scope does in fact have a few small edge cases that are well established but relatively uncommon (Eg. software license questions from the perspective of a software engineer, some overlap with Project Management) however is it terribly important that we complicate and confuse?
This is the problem when the community is a group of ...
New logo for Software Engineering Stack Exchange
Deliver working software frequently, from a couple of weeks to a
couple of months, with a preference to the shorter timescale.
I think we'd like the new stuff sooner rather than later.
You have consulted with stakeholders.
You have cooperated with them as much as naturally ...
I like maple_shaft's answer, however wanted to write my own for reducing the on-topic page's wall-of-text since it's far too long for a comment on his answer.
What topics can I ask about here?
Software Engineering Stack Exchange is a Q&A site for professionals and students in software engineering and related fields
who are interested in getting ...
I like Software Engineering as a title over Programmers.
However, I'm not really ok with tagline containing only a reference to 60's-era-introduced, waterfall-type methodology, and also in particular, I'm not really ok not calling out any notion of the critical thinking that leads to good programming practices that lead to good programs.
There is no ...
Please disregard this post if there is any danger of it causing a delay in the name change.
Well, it has a coffee cup. So I'm already ecstatic. :)
With all due respect to our chronically-overworked design team, let me show you what an hour playing with windows paint let me do.
Why? Well, in addition to having a healthy respect for symmetry, I like ...
This proposed tagline and pictorial representation miss the mark in conveying the (current/new) site scope and the new name, "Software Engineering."
While I agree that the site scope should include software development lifecycles and more generally software development processes, methods, and methodology, I propose that we not use the terms "System ...
It would be a good idea but if I remember correctly the primary reason against this happening is that this would significantly hurt SEO.
Search Engine Optimization
This however can be a PITA, but it is not the insurmountable challenge that the StackExchange folks make it seem.
How to Change Domain Names and not Lose SEO
Acquire new domain ...
In the How To Ask it says, "Is your question about software development?" That seems like a pretty good name.
The Tour, has a list of questions not to ask. New posters are not reading this list. Many items are straight-forward.
Don't ask about...

The motivation behind the rebranding is not to change the focus of the site and express this through the title. It is to make the title match the actual focus more closer, as it is understood by the experts of this community during the last 2-4 years. So if you had a question valid for "Programmers" in that time period, it will most probably still be valid ...
